Behind The Lens

Location

This is Mach Picchu, the ancient Inca Citadel over 7000 feet (2,400 m) high up in the Andes Mountains in Peru. Its not that far from Cusco, another ancient capital of the Inca world. This is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the seven wonders of the world.

Time

This photo was taken around 12pm Peru Standard Time which is the same as US Central and -5 GMT

Lighting

The day was fairly bright even though there was distant stormy clouds ahead. It did become overcast and began raining an hour after this was taken.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Nikon P900, a super zoom bridge camera that was perfect for this type of long range shot.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo is obvious. Faced with this wonderful vista anyone with any type of camera would want to record what they see, to always have a memory of such a fantastic opportunity. Machu Picchu is not easy to reach, whatever way you go. After arriving at the main site you have to be quite fit to climb the higgledy piggledy stairs of varying heights and widths, and different levels. Our guide told us that if we chose to take on the challenge and climb the hundreds of steps then we have to remember one thing......you have to descend them. That was some challenge on its own.

Editing

The only post processing was exposure and contrast.

In my camera bag

I only had a Nikon P900, but thats been upgraded to the P1000 with a whopping 125x zoom capability.

Feedback

The lower levels of Machu Picchu are photogenic indeed, but to capture this image took quite a lot of determination and effort to get to the height this photo was taken. Its really about getting the best angles, although there are some restrictions on where I was allowed to go as the site is being preserved and lots of feet over the precious heritage lands would ruin it for future generations of those wishing to get the best shots.
