Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. My family visits often, and I couldn't resist the colors during the fireworks show.

Time

I never planned this photo; I just had my camera with me and was watching the fireworks with my girlfriend when I realized I could take a pretty cool shot of this. The fireworks show starts at 9:00 PM EST, so this was shot at around 9:10 on January 3rd, 2020.

Lighting

Due to the sudden lighting changes from the fireworks and Disney's projection mapping on the castle, I found it quite difficult to get the shot focused and choose the right settings quick enough. I finally decided to stick with an aperture of f/4, ISO at 10000, and shutter at 1/60, then wait for the perfect time to take the shot.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3500 with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

This photo was completely unplanned. I've shot the fireworks show before, but I usually use a tripod and set a very slow shutter speed. In this particular show, I just wanted to watch - however, I noticed some colors I hadn't seen before and had to get my camera out. If I had to name one thing that inspired it then it would have to be the colors.

Editing

There wasn't as much post processing involved as I usually have. I only needed to put the photo through Lightroom, adjust the colors and exposure, and export it.

In my camera bag

I always carry my D3500 with an 18-55mm lens and 70-300mm lens, so that I'm always ready in case I change my mind about the type of photo I want to take. There is always a cleaning kit, filter pack, and lighting attachment that suits the location and weather of the day. I also tend to carry another camera with me, whether it be my old Canon Rebel T3 or my dads old Kodak film camera from the 80's.

Feedback

Walt Disney World is stunning, and every photographer knows that sometimes you see things that you didn't plan for and have to get the shot. Well, in Disney, that happens about 4 times more often. Be ready for everything, for fireworks in particular be ready for the incredible lighting changes and multitude of color displays. It tends to be a little chilly around showtime, be mindful of the huge crowds that don't care if they're in your way, and remember that the show is only about 15 minutes long, so you have limited time. Most people leave after the fireworks, so you can get some better shots after, especially behind the castle. They wet the ground back there so nothing catches on fire from the fireworks, which makes for some amazing reflection shots.
