This photo is a double exposure, meaning it is two pictures in one. The first picture that serves as the background was taken of my roommate in my dorm room. The second was taken in my home studio. Both photos were then put in Photoshop to be merged together as a double exposure.Time
I took the background photo one afternoon after classes, around 4 PM, when my roommate was practicing in our dorm common area. I had an idea so I took out my camera and told him to keep strumming while I took some photos. Later one night when I was visiting home for a weekend, maybe 2 AM, I thought of another idea. So I took my camera out and got to work.Lighting
The way my dorm is laid out makes out for some great natural lighting. This meant I didn't need to change any lighting to get the shot I needed. For the second photo, it was night and I was limited with supplies, however, I managed to use a couple of lamps on either side of a piece of sheet music that created a stunning black and white photo.Equipment
Both photos were shot with a Nikon D3500 and 18-55mm NIKKOR lens. The second photo in the double exposure also used two lamps for lighting.Inspiration
I had been sitting with my roommate listening to him play music for about an hour when the idea just came to me. I had always wanted to try concert photography but never had the chance, so this seemed like a great opportunity to get something similar, and the timing of my idea was perfect. Later one night I couldn't sleep and my head was full of photo ideas but I couldn't do any of them, but one stood out. This became my first double exposure and to this day is my favorite.Editing
With double exposure photos, there is a lot of post-processing to take place. My camera doesn't have an option to capture an image on top of a previously taken image, meaning I had to use Photoshop to get the result I wanted. Using Photoshop, I merged the photos with a screening blending option. Then, using the eraser tool, I took out part of the second photo to highlight the neck of the guitar. In my camera bag
Normally, I carry my Nikon D3500 camera body with am 18-55mm lens and 70-300mm lens. Along with that, I carry a tripod, cleaning kit, lens filters, and a small lighting fixture.Feedback
The original photos are the easy part. Don't try too hard to get that perfect picture, remember that it will be blended with another photo. In post-processing, it isn't as hard as it seems at first. The settings are pretty easy to understand and there are tons of videos on YouTube and even from Adobe that explains step by step how to create a double exposure.
