Behind The Lens

Location

In my backyard. I did not dare to use the burning stars inside my home si I moved outside after the rain stopped. This winter we only have wind and rain, instead of nice icy or snow conditions.

Time

Late afternoon, a bit into the beginning of the evening. The advantage of living in the Netherlands is the early nightfall during wintertime.

Lighting

The purple leds are always "on", all seasons they just hang there as a decoration, in an old wired basket, where farmers used to dry their unions in. Now it is filled with empty glass bottles and leds, just for decoration. I purposely wanted to capture the burning 2020-stars but also the nice warm toning of the leds. This was a challenge as the white light is so intens that the photo can be easily overexposed. So after three attempts and three burned stars, it finally succeeded using Aperture f/29, ISO 100, Shutter time of 96 seconds (1) and a Focal Length of 60mm. I am happy!

Equipment

A full frame Nikon D800e (The Beast), a Tamron 28-300 mm (little beast) an Manfrotto carbon tripod, no flash (please, no!) and a genius AI device, named Arsenal

Inspiration

The 2020 Celebrations of course! The end of a nice year, and the fresh start of 2020. I did want to capture something moody and original, so this is the result.

Editing

Only a bit cropping and pushing the colors, nothing else. It worked out very well with my concept.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D800e, the Tamron 28- 300 mm lens, a Manfrotto carbon travellers tripod and the AI Arsenal device, my iPhone and cigarettes.

Feedback

Figure out which story you want to tell, there's zillions of images taken and dumped on the internet daily, but do not let you get down by that. Just stick to your own talent and creativity, and follow your own path to glory.
