Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at my Sister's house in Southern Shores NC.

Time

It was about mid afternoon, as best I can remember.

Lighting

It was a cloudy overcast day, but the clouds were a thin layer, so the bright sun was casting a well diffused light in all directions. I was shooting in the kitchen with pretty good overhead lights, but not bright enough to shoot without flash, if using auto mode. I was probably using shutter priority mode, as I often do. Took several shots of the flower, adjusting the shutter speed until I got what I was seeing with my eyes to closely match the image I was capturing.

Equipment

I was using my Canon T5i with the 18-55 kit lens mounted, hand held,no flash.

Inspiration

I was planning to take pics of family members, but everyone was camera shy that Easter Sunday, so I was just playing around with this flower. It was a beautiful flower and I liked the way the multiple sources of light were making it look against the eggshell white wall behind it. I was not really planning this shot at all. I just saw a photo opp and made the best I could with what I had. I was surprised when I got this up on my laptop. I was like wow this turned out better than I expected! I'm glad that I took the time to try several different exposure settings. I guess I nailed it.

Editing

I think this was left as shot, but I'm not sure.

In my camera bag

My T5i with a 75x300mm lens mounted, the 18x55mm kit lens, extra batteries, battery charger, memory cards and lens cleaning supplies. I have ordered a Tamron 100-400 zoom lens, which probably wont fit in my current bag, but will most likely be mounted on the camera most of the time.

Feedback

I did some experimenting with different exposure settings, mainly the shutter speed, as I was in shutter priority mode, with this shot. But, I do the same in manual mode,if there's enough time. There's not much time for this in wildlife shooting, but I do some experimenting with the surrounding area while waiting for something to show up. I shoot several images at different exposures and pick my favorite later, when I can see the image on a large monitor. I also leave my camera in burst mode at all times, so that I get several copies of each shot. That way, I can pick my favorite shot and the sharpest copy of each shot. Although I wasn't doing so at the time that I took this shot, I have since started shooting everything in RAW. I'm always learning and looking for ways to improve my shots.
