Behind The Lens

Location

My sister and 7 year old niece came to stay at mine for a few days. My niece loves parks; swings and slides. While we were there we walked around a pond and came face to face with this beautiful creature. The park is the Queen Sofia park in Guardamar, Alicante, Spain.

Time

We'd just been for a stroll along the promenade and stopped for drink. Afterwards we headed to the park so my niece could burn off some energy before we went for dinner so it was probably around 4pm

Lighting

The park is mostly in shade as the sun in spain can be quite harsh and it's easy to burn. I was lucky the peacock was walking into a brighter area of shade leaving the background slightly darker. I set my aperture so the background would be blurred out as it wasn't particularly interesting but it also helped make the peacock pop in the image; contrast of colours and brightness. Peacock plumage is so beautiful.

Equipment

I didn't take my tripod as it was just a casual afternoon out. I just grabbed my Canon EOS M50 and the 55-200mm lens which is my default lens if i'm out and about.

Inspiration

I primarily took my camera with me to get some holiday photos of my niece but the pond in the park has terrapins, ducks, and walking about are peacocks and squirrels. The peacocks look stunning against either the green grass or brown tree roots and mud. As we walked around the pond i noticed the peacock swaggering around towards us so quickly knelt down and captured him perfectly. Something different than waiting for him to give a full display of his tail feathers.

Editing

The photo is pretty much straight of the camera. I might have just tweaked the colour balance, brightness and contrast but only a minute amount. It didn't really need any adjustments.

In my camera bag

If i'm going out for with the sole intention of taking photographs i take: Canon EOS M50 Canon 11-22mm lens Canon 15-45mm lens Canon 55-200mm lens Canon EX430AI flash. Jessops Tripod ND1 - 10 filter CPL filter

Feedback

Often patience plays a large part of getting stunning images of animals/birds but there is also a great deal of luck; being in the right place at the right time. The only constant is you. You have to be familiar and confident with your equipment so when you get an opportunity you don't miss it because you take too long adjusting your settings etc
