Location
I took this photo in a local studio that I rented out for this photoshoot. Although with this concept I could have taken it pretty much in any indoor location I prefer studio work because it allows for a more professional collaboration between the model and myself, and I find it helps to act and get in to character.Time
This was taken later afternoon / early evening. No particular reason other than it was mutually available on both of our schedules. Since I prefer using studio lighting rather than natural light time of day has less of an impact on imagery.Lighting
I wanted to create more emphasis on her emotional look, and have dramatic shadow fall off. This is a single light set up shot through a large octobox camera left, angled to create more shadow fall off towards the upper right of the image.Equipment
Camera is Canon 5D Mark IV with the 35mm f1.4 lens. Probably my favorite combination of camera/lens. I used a small step ladder to get just a bit more height to shoot down on to the model, and get more of the fabric.Inspiration
I've been fascinated with fabric work in model shoots, and like to play with tension, and complimenting the model's physique. This is one of the few loose fabric concepts from my portfolio, but once I placed the fabric down on to the floor all I could envision was her wrapped in it with it fanned out somewhat circular.Editing
General overall clean-up of distracting elements. Some clean up of the skin, and added some punch to the color. I didn't feel that this image should be ultra sharp so I kept it a little soft to add to the overall dreamy feel.In my camera bag
I'm very much a prime shooter so with my camera (5DMKIV) I always have my 35MM f1.4, 85MM f1.2, and Sigma 105mm f1.4. I usually have a second bag with 2x strobes regardless of whether I'm on location or in studio, and interestingly whether I work with fabric or not I always have a small baggie with a dozen or so smaller clips/clamps. They've been invaluable for clothing, hair, fabric and even helping with organizing accessories.Feedback
Collaboration with the model by far one of the most important aspects. Once the lighting, framing and focus are dialed in every shot is nailed, so then it's all about what feeling or aesthetic you're trying to create. Sharing, reviewing, discussing every few shots helps create some of those really great images and also builds a great working partnership.
