Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the deck of the Viking Atla on the River Danube as we left Vienna, Austria.

Time

November 29,2019; 17:44 (5:44PM)

Lighting

I was playing in full manual mode and trying to get a feel for low light photography on the Nikon Z-50. I took numerous pictures of this church while using the light meter as my guide, over exposure, under exposure, ideal exposure...more or less trying to see what worked best. I didn't really know what I had until looking at the images later that night.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon Z-50; 16-50mm, f/3.5-6.3 No Flash Manual Mode, RAW

Inspiration

From the River Danube, St. Francis of Assisi Church is a dominant landmark. As we left Vienna just after sundown, the air was crisp and clear and the clouds were reflecting the light of the City of Vienna. I wanted to get a good photo of the church as we sailed passed, but wanted to capture the reflected light of the city in the clouds. I just started dialing the light meter up and down and taking shots that looked good through the EVF.

Editing

RAW white balance correction, and cropped to remove the Reichsbrücke. Converted to JPG for publishing.

In my camera bag

Since my photography centers around travel and backcountry my equipment choices are centered around "light but capable". My bag consists of two cameras, a Canon S110 which gives me RAW and Full Manual mode in a very small and lightweight form factor, and a Nikon Z-50 body with 2 kit lenses; 16-50mm and 50-250mm. The Z-50 replaces a Canon EOS ixLite SLR.

Feedback

Photos are extensions of our emotional state at the time we take them. If you are inspired to take the picture, do it. I made over 15 exposures of this church as we sailed passed because something drew me to the entirety of the scene. It wasn't until later that night that I realized what I had captured, and the image was a reminder of that point in time.
