Behind The Lens

Location

The Portrait was taken inside an at-home photo studio. I used two LED spotlights, one on my left and another on my right. The LED spotlight on my lift was higher and slightly tilted downward in order to highlight the top of the hair.

Time

The time of day for this shot in particular is not of too much relevance, since it was indoors, but it was around 12:00 PM in the evening.

Lighting

The lighting was designed to light only the areas that I wanted to show. I had two LED spotlights for the shot, one at head height and another at a slightly higher height for good light coverage just where I needed it. My intent was to show sharp shadow around the neck in a stylized way, to create contrast and make it an edgier portrait.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3200, with an aperture of f/1.8, ISO 100, Shutter speed of 1/25, and Focal Length of 35/1. A tripod was necessary for the shot to keep it stable, and a remote shutter trigger was involved in the shooting of this photo. I used LED spotlights. No other equipment was necessary.

Inspiration

I really enjoy portrait photography and I wanted to practice taking a good portrait with sharp light instead of the typical softbox lighting, for an indoor shoot.

Editing

I did do some post processing to change the color image to black and white. Firstly, I brought up the levels of contrast a bit and brought up the levels of red to make it a bit darker in the photo, but not by much.

In my camera bag

I normally carry all of my equipment with me. Lighting equipment, My lenses, tripods, and softboxes. Most of my photo shoots are indoors, or events. If I take an outdoor portrait or photo, I carry the necessary lens along with my camera, a tripod, and a large reflector to have natural light as my tool instead.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to try out of the box ideas. Test different ways to move your lighting equipment, and take off the front of the softbox to get that sharper light / shadow contrast.
