Location
This was taken at the bidgemia station homestead yards in the Gascoyne area of Western Australia. A remote cattle station, surrounded by masses of corellas, cattle and dry red dirt... and not much else!Time
It would have been possibly around 9am. We had been loading cattle into trucks after they had been mustered in the day before. It was before morning smoko, so no later than 9am.Lighting
To be honest, this photo was a complete fluke. Nothing was set up, obviously, as they are wild birds. I was just in the right place at the right time. Everything about this is natural.Equipment
Thankfully I had my camera handy this day. At the time I used a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, which has a fixed lense. It was very much a point and shoot type situation. I couldnt get too close to the birds, in case i scared them away, so I was zoomed in as close as I could and still had to crop this photo a large amount.Inspiration
It was right there infront of me. Right place at the right time. I just had to make the most of the situation! There were hundreds of corellas in and around the yards, so i was hoping for some sort of decent photo of them... but then spotted the galah perched on the rail next to a line of corellas and got excited! ???? Galahs and/or corellas around cattle yards in WA is not a strange site- they are everywhere! But one galah amongst hundreds of corellas is rather peculiar. I feel it was a once in a lifetime type photo opportunity and I just had to take it!Editing
As I said earlier, this photo was taken from a fair distance and I didnt have a great set up for it. So I did have to crop it. I also brought the colours up a bit, sharpened it and brought some contrast into it as it was a little flat due to not having a great lens for the situation.. i probably also used the wrong settings as I am only a beginner and was even more so at the time of taking this photo. In my camera bag
I have since upgraded my set up, so these days I use a Nikon D850 and a Nikkor 200-500mm lens for bird photography- how i wish I had that for this photo! My camera bag has of course my D850 and my 3 favourite lenses- the Nikkor 200-500 f5.6, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and the Tamron 15-30mm f2.8. And when out on the station I take my DJI Magic Pro Drone along too. You just never know what you might find along the way!Feedback
As I say, this was a fluke shot, so I'm really not sure. I suppose, take the shot first and then see if you can get closer for a close up. Dont risk the birds being disturbed and flying away before getting a shot of any sort. Use whatever camera you have! Dont feel like you need to have the latest and greatest set up, or that the photo isnt worth taking because of the distance etc, just take the photo and see what happens! It might not turn out, but it might also be your most popular photo! As is what has happened for me with this photo. Also, remember to enjoy the moment. Its easy to just get caught up trying to get the best photo and you actually miss the moment, being their in real life, enjoying it and taking it in for all that it is. Always have fun. Get the photo. But then put the camera down and enjoy the moment, in the moment!
