Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my house on the very weekend we moved in!

Time

We took this photo in the afternoon after an early morning moving things in.

Lighting

The lighting behind us created great contrast to our features making it a perfect set up for a black and white.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon D3500 with a 55mm prime f/1.4 lens and a human tripod, my mother! I set up the shot told her where to stand and she snapped away for me!

Inspiration

I wanted to capture a natural moment in our relationship during an exciting moment in our lives. Having my mother take the shots for me really helped me capture a candid moment that didn't feel as staged. Unlike a tripod and remote set up, we simply didn't know when she was opening the shutter. I am actually teasing my SO in this shot trying to get him to smile and she captured that moment for us. The doorway acting as a frame for the photo was great because it adds so much context to the situation. We have keys in our hands and we're standing on the threshold of our home and symbolically a new life.

Editing

I increased the contrast and sharpened it as well as adding a black and white filter.

In my camera bag

I always bring my 55mm prime lens with me. It has the largest aperture making it easy to take shots in less than ideal lighting conditions.

Feedback

Look for things to naturally frame your subjects in. Be careful of too much light, or it can overcome the details in the photo.
