Behind The Lens

Location

On a cruise holiday visiting Bali, this was taken at a wood carving artists gallery/exhibition in the village of Ubud.

Time

This shot was taken on an open verandah at around midday

Lighting

Only natural outdoor light was used, without the need for any exposure compensation.

Equipment

I had left my camera on the bus, but had my iPhone 6 in my pocket. So, this is a handheld shot taken on my phone.

Inspiration

Amongst the many examples of exquisite craftsmanship, this piece really stood out. It encompasses traditional carving techniques, with an almost mythical appearance of an elephant, yet leaving no doubt what it was. It was quite a sizable piece - I only wished I could have brought it home. This shot was the next best thing.

Editing

A little straightening and cropping was all it needed to ensure the carved detail of the elephant's head was the focus of the image.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Sony mirrorless model, with a few lenses including a couple of primes and a super zoom, a tripod, and lens cleaning equipment. And my phone in my pocket.

Feedback

You never know when you're going to spot something interesting while travelling. I almost always carry my camera when calling at 'places of interest'. On this occasion I broke my own rule. It clearly gives credence to the old adage that the best camera is the one you have with you.
