Walking the rainy streets of Nuremberg in Germany while on holiday I expected few chances to capture worthwhile shots of the city. Man, was I wrong!! This is where the altstadt (old city) and the modern city meet.Time
In the late afternoon, after walking the streets for a few hours, tired and looking for some indoor attraction I finally found the Neues Museum - a gallery which shows art and design from the 1950s to the present day on over 3,000 square meters of collection and exhibition space. Very memorable and worthwhile visit.Lighting
The rain had stopped for a few minutes, but the day was still grey, dull, and overcast - conditions I (now) find ideal for cityscapes due to the lack of strong shadows and difficult contrasting light conditions, almost demanding HDR techniques due to the disparately lit areas.Equipment
Not expecting to get great images I left my dslr in the hotel and set out with my trusty Olympus S300D (pocket camera). The best camera at any given time is the one you have with you, right? Aperture f/3.1?ISO 80?Shutter 1/100?Focal Length 29/5 handheld.Inspiration
The altstadts (historic old cities) of Germany are a photographers paradise, filled with interesting old architecture and history of the country. I found the disconnect between the modern glass fronted architecture of the Neues Museum and the older buildings of the adjacent altstadt a fascinating dichotomy of styles. Getting the two cities (old and new) together in one shot like this was irresistible. I like particularly how you get drawn into the building to look - are the people inside the building, or reflections? or both perhaps?Editing
Conversion from colour to black and white - for this particular contest. Done using Skylum's Luminar software, applying only other selected filters to improve clarity. In my camera bag
I now shoot with a Sony mirrorless camera body, and a range of lenses. Doing mainly travel photography I tend to use mostly versatile wide range zoom lenses. A spare battery (fully charged) is always at hand, as is a lens brush. Where permitted I use a light weight aluminium tripod, mainly for slower speed indoor shooting. That's it.Feedback
Keep your eyes open for great reflection shots - they;re almost guaranteed attention grabbers and there are more around you than you'd imagine once you start looking for them. Framing is important as often they do limit post edit cropping.
