Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Key West, Florida

Time

Sunset is my favorite time of day and Key West offers incredibly opportunities. This is one of my favorite images. I took it in May, 2008

Lighting

I composed the shot of the seagull on the post so it was backlight by the sunset and even included a bi-plane (in the upper left corner of the frame).

Equipment

This was a hand held shot. I know I used a Pentax with a 90 to 210 lens and Fuji film. I do not recall the settings.

Inspiration

I was watching the plane. I was going to use the sunset as a "canvas" if the plane flew my way. Then bird landed and created the inspiration.

Editing

I had to digitize the film with an Epson Perfection 370 photo scanner. After that I applied various filters from Paintshop Pro 2020, to repair minor damage to the image caused by the age of the developed film. Then did some light touch up to remove unwanted lights showing up in dark portions of the image.

In my camera bag

I now use a Panasonic DMC FZ200. It can do anything except make coffee. I pack a table top tripod when I'm going to do close work; a 52mm polarizer and interchangeable standard filter, a lint dust brush and a lint puffer, a small spray bottle of water (for floral pictures). I also carry a Cannon Power Shot ELPH 300HS for point and shoot situations. Although it's very old and severely beaten up, it continues to take great pictures.

Feedback

Look to the West when storms are moving out. The light tends to present all kinds of opportunities, particularly in the afternoon. Rather than wait for the Golden Hour, look for a subject and physically move around to get the best foreground/background combination. Thanks for asking! Etienne
