Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Lulu’s Cafe in West Nyack, NY.

Time

This was shot about 2PM.

Lighting

The dominant light is coming from the large picture window at the front of the cafe.

Equipment

The camera is a full frame Nikon D600. The lens is a fully manual Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 macro.

Inspiration

When I visit family in West Nyack, we always have to stop by Lulu’s for breakfast to die for, or the most amazing dessert treats. The decor is over the top vintage fun. On this day, we had finished a late lunch and were awaiting receipt of our own treats. To kill time, I asked permission take pictures of inspired decor. I wanted to be able to share the decadent sweets with those yet to discover Lulu’s.

Editing

All images can benefit from some post processing. I am not a digital artist. I limit my post work to only what I did in the darkroom to make what I consider the best print. For this image, white balance correction compensate for the daylight from the window and the incandescent room lighting. Cropping was done to get the 5x7 aspect ratio. I upped the contrast a bit. I’m a contrast junky and use it to add pop to images. I burned in the corners slightly as a means of getting the cookies brighter. That’s about it.

Feedback

1. Always ask permission when photographing someone else’s business establishment. 2. Get close. Food is small and full of detail. You want to convey its deliciousness. 3. Food loves natural light. Take advantage of it if you can.
