I'm thrilled to receive the 2020 Choice Award! Many thanks for the support and kindness shown by fellow photographers and peers. There is so much talent within ViewBug from around the globe, that it feels like one large family scattered around the world. I'm honored to be included in this photog family. We are all the same in many ways. If only our artistic talents bring us together, then let it be.

Behind The Lens

Location

A random walk around our home shooting photos of my recently planted Chrysanthemums.

Time

It was approximately 5:00 p.m. EST on a random day walking through my garden. In Florida, the sun can be brutal. Timing shots can be tricky to blow out the background from the harsh sun. The light was perfectly shadowed, casting the slightest of light for a soft dreamy look.

Lighting

I was visualizing a soft, dreamy look for my Chrysanthemums. The colors were so beautiful and the sun was shadowed by this time of day (5:00 pm EST). With the sun shining softly casting the softest of light over the mums giving them the dreamy look.

Equipment

I shot this laying on my stomach, elbows on the ground with my Nikon D7500, Lens: Nikon DX 18/140

Inspiration

Seeing the same flower in different lighting can make that same flower look completely different in all scenarios. My goal is to help others see it in a way they may not have seen it before. My tones and colors are bold, rich and deep, showcasing the depth and details of the flower. The light was just perfect for this shot to slip away.

Editing

Yes, I edited this in PhotoShop by simply adjusting the tones, light input, and highlighted the details leaving the softness in the lighting do the rest.

In my camera bag

I carry two cameras with me. My first camera the Nikon D3300 with my trusty 55mm lens gives me terrific macro shots. It's my go-to for those shots. I also have my 200mm lens for my Nikon D3300 which lends itself well for landscape shots and for shooting at distances. Then my favorite camera Nikon D7500, with my Nikon 18/140mm lens which has yet to come off of the body other than to be cleaned. This camera is the most versatile and easiest camera to use than I've ever experienced. Nikon hit a home run with this model. My bag also has the usual cleaning kit and supplies, also a squeaker from a dog's toy (this grabs the attention of kids and pets for the perked up look), a trust hand mirror for creative shots, a lens ball because you just never know, and of course extra fully charged batteries.

Feedback

I find that getting down or up on the same level as your subject is best. You can really grab the depth and details much more so than a straight head on downward shot. Doing so will also catch the rest of the plant in bokeh giving you a beautiful background to your subject.
