Built between 1739 - 1745, Noble Jones built his fort out of wood and tabby, which is a type of concrete made from oyster shells and lime. This gave it the name the Tabby Fort. Sitting on the south side of the Isle of Hope, the fort itself was one and a half stories and had five rooms. James Oglethorpe gave Jones a twelve man marine garrison, along with a scout boat that would patrol the river. The ruins reside today at Wormsloe Historic Site. Jones his Isle the name “Wormsloe” from Wormslow Hundred, Herefordshire in Welsh where his family came from.
