Iceland's Rivers and Waterfalls

Iceland has no lack of waterfalls and rivers. The land is shaped by the waters that run through and around it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Iceland, at Gullfoss Waterfall. I had a whirlwind exploration around Iceland, hiring a car and driving most of the south coast in just a few days.

Time

This was taken near the end of a long day adventuring around Iceland. I had just enough time to squeeze in a trip to see Gullfoss, and it happened that I ended up getting this shot just after the sun had set. With the light fading, I had jogged out to this point with my camera, as it was near the end of a path that ran along the waterfall. A quick setup, and a long exposure, and this image was the outcome. It was taken around 7:00pm local time, in the middle of September.

Lighting

The gloomy clouds, combined with the sun having just dipped below the horizon, created a dramatic sky with a gloomy cast over the landscape. The spray coming from the waterfall added to the ominous atmosphere.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D with a 17-40mm f/4L lens on a small tripod. It was shot at f/22 and ISO 50, and was an hdr bracketed shot.

Inspiration

Iceland has inspiration for landscape photography everywhere you look! I was trying to take in the lovely atmosphere and landscapes on my short trip through the country, while also trying to capture this magnificent country on my camera.

Editing

This was an hdr shot, so it was 3 shots, exposure bracketed. Basic processing was done in Lightroom to the images and then they were merged to help increase the dynamic range of the scene.

In my camera bag

My regular kit when this was shot was in a Ona Bowery shoulder bag, consisting of my Canon 5D, an old manual Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AIS with mount adapter, the Canon 17-40mm f/4L, a spare battery, lenspen, and cleaning cloth. I also had a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L (non-IS) that I would carry if I knew I was going to use it. But for landscapes, the 17-40 was the bread and butter. If I was going to do long exposures, I'd also have my filters and mini tripod in the shoulder bag, and occasionally my larger tripod when I knew I'd need it. Nowadays, I've switched to Fuji, and have a Fuji X-T3, Fuji 23mm f/2, Fuji 50-140mm f/2.8, Viltrox 85mm f/1.8, Rokinon 12mm f/2, and the old Nikkor. All the accessories are pretty much the same.

Feedback

Iceland's landscapes are amazing anywhere you look. You have to be a bit lucky with the weather since it can be pretty volatile, but if you go in with an open mind and an eye for enjoying the experience, your imagination is the only limit to make fantastic images, especially in a place as stunning as Iceland!
