Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Bonsai Rock near Incline Village, Lake Tahoe.

Time

This photo was shot right before sunset in July of 2019.

Lighting

My original goal was to expose for Bonsai Rock and the "Bonsai Trees" that are growing on it but since the sun was still setting it was impossible to get any detail of the rock and trees without taking multiple exposures and merging them so I opted to let the light win and went with a silhouette style instead.

Equipment

This was taken with my Canon T1i and my Canon 15-85mm IS USM lens with a tripod.

Inspiration

I had always wanted to get a spectacular shot of Bonsai Rock and was finally in the area celebrating our wedding anniversary. My vision was to get a sunset shot with glass smooth water and the smaller rocks sticking out above the water line in the foreground. When we finally found the location the waterline was covering the smaller rocks for the first time in years due to copious snowfall the winter before, and the water was choppy and unsmooth. In addition to this, there was a group of people climbing up the rock and jumping off over, and over, and over again. I found myself frustrated that these folks were in my shot and didn't seem to be leaving anytime soon. My vision for the perfect Bonsai Rock shot seemed to be shattered then I realized...lets make lemons into lemonade and do an action shot!

Editing

I adjusted the hue to make the sky a bit more purple and pink instead of yellow and orange, darkened what little shadows existed on the rock and the people jumping off to enhance the silhouette effect and added a bit of sharpness and exposure to the small trail of water leaving the jumper's foot as he jumped into the lake to enhance the sense of motion that was happening.

In my camera bag

I now carry a Canon 5D mark II with a Canon 24-105 F/4 and a Benro carbon fiber tripod with a Benro ball head mount.

Feedback

Make the best of what you have even if the scene isn't what you had envisioned, always stay just a bit longer than you think you should and keep shooting like crazy!
