Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small plot of woods next to my home in Lindenwold, NJ, U.S.A.

Time

This was taken on September 21, 2019 at 3:47PM.

Lighting

I wanted to have some contrast between the gills and the rest of the fungi and I wanted a moody atmosphere, which was helped along by shooting under the forest canopy, allowing for an arguably underexposed photo.

Equipment

This shot was taken with the Canon EFS 18-55mm with a macro converter.

Inspiration

I was traipsing through some woods near my house looking for fungi of any sort. One could say I was on a fungi kick. Not only was I interested in what species there were but I wanted to see if I could get some interesting photos of a normally overlooked organism.

Editing

I actually didn't feel the need to do any post-processing with this photo. Not because it was perfect, but because I liked how it turned out.

In my camera bag

I always pack my Canon EF 75-300mm 4-5.6 III and occasionally I'll throw in the classic kit lens, the Canon EFS 18-55mm with a macro converter off a wide angle converter. It is useful for occasional insects and plants, and in sometimes fungi.

Feedback

Fall is the best time of year to find fungi. Search the leaf litter, logs, anywhere it is moist. Especially after it has rained. Fungi prefer moist weather and since it'll be during the fall, it is best to have some long pants at the very least in the case it is a little chilly. Be prepared to get low, get a little dirty and do not be afraid to pluck the fruiting bodies (the part we see above ground, what we call "mushrooms") to get some gill shots. Get creative with the lighting.
