Location
Upon my last visit to the small village of Edale in the Peak district national park I was able to take advantage of the good weather we were having and hike to the top of Kinder Scout. I took this photo at the top of a footpath leading up one of the streams that run down the side of Kinder Scout.Time
I remember taking this image at about 11am when we were taking a long deserved break after traversing the rocky ascent.Lighting
I was just sat there admiring the view when a sudden beam of sunlight came streaming through a break in the gloom overhead. It was early February so the sun was quite low but it gave a twinkle to the crystals within the stones that just caught my eye. They glittered for a few precious minutes as the sun poked through small gaps in the clouds.Equipment
Sony Alpha a3000 with the standard Sony E-mount 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom Lens. I simply balanced my camera on my daysack and waited for the sun to appear from behind a cloud.Inspiration
I was inspired by the simple beauty of what most people hiking past me ignored. To most they are just a pile of rocks, to me they were an opportunity to capture something natural and often overlooked.Editing
With all my images I avoid post-processing at all costs if I can help it. The same went for this image. In my camera bag
Normally I carry a Sony Alpha a3000 with 8-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom Lens and a larger 55-210 f/4.5-6.3 lens for distance shots. As I mostly photograph landscapes or objects with vast landscape backgrounds I don't normally need much more in the way of lenses. Besides this I like to carry 3-4 spare batteries and a simple unbranded camera timer remote. As most of my photography is done whilst hiking I like to pack very light and compact whilst still having a camera with reasonable performance and quality. I find that my Sony Alpha a3000 has been perfect for this since I got it 4-5 years ago.Feedback
This was a simple one off image I took whilst waiting for others in my hiking party to finish having a rest. I would say that this image can come across as simple but was in some ways difficult to take. It was about opportunity and taking the time to enjoy the surroundings, looking at every detail in front of you, you don't have to take a photo of everything as it's also about enjoying the experience. The more you enjoy what you are doing the more likely you are to capture something special, even if by chance.
