Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in February of 2018. I was spending a few days in Assisi, Italy, just to meditate. I had finished dinner and was walking in Assisi. It began to rain, at 10:30pm. I walked to the Basilica. This is where St Francis is buried. (The present Pope Francis, took his name from this Saint). The lights outside the Basilica were reflecting off the stone on the ground. I found a position that was perfect for this photo.

Time

The photo was taken just before midnight. There was a light rain. The conditions were perfect for this photograph.

Lighting

I wanted to present the Basilica in a way that captured its enormity. There are 3 levels. The bottom level is where St Francis is buried. The middle level is where the entrance to the Basilica is. You can see 2 wood doors in my photograph. Inside are vaulted ceilings painted primary by Cimabue. A pre-renaissance painter. The upper level is very different. Most of the paintings are done by Giotto.

Equipment

The truth is that I used an iPhone!

Inspiration

This is my home away from home. It’s a great place to meditate. I have been there several times. Always in February. Because there are very few visitors at that time of year. I get up really early to join the Franciscan monks as they pray the rosary. And then do a beautiful mass. So mystical and special.

Editing

No.

In my camera bag

I had my Nikon D850. But I left it in my hotel room!

Feedback

Get a camera or use your smartphone to take as many photos as you want. The entire town of Assisi is beautiful. There are many other beautiful churches there. The entire town is enchanting. I believe that if a person stops worrying, and thinks of what really inspires them, they will get a shot of something beautiful.
