The incredible colors of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) in the Sacred Valley of Peru attracted my family to take up the demanding hike in March. As we started at the trailhead at 5:30 am, we realized that vicissitudes of weather were as big a part of the adventure as the 5000m altitude. The biggest unknown was whether the overnight snow would let us see the colors or not. As it turned out, when we reached our destination, we were treated to a unique view of half colors and half snow.
