Behind The Lens

Location

Canandaigua, New York (Finger Lakes Region).

Time

It was mid autumn, between noon and 2pm.

Lighting

It was late in October between noon and 2pm. The sun was high and slightly to the south.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon 6D. This image was shot with a Tamron SP 28-75 F/2.8 Di at ISO 50 with a 5 stop ND filter coupled with a polarizing filter. The lens was at 28mm and F/8, The shutter speed was 1/25sec. The camera was on a tripod.

Inspiration

This is a place that I pass regularly. It’s one of those places that I always think “I Should photograph that” but never took the time. Every once and a while we know exactly how we want the image to look. I saw it in my head for years and finally pulled over and captured it. The barn is facing a lightly traffic road and on the other side of that road is a giant empty field. The reality of the scene is very silent. It’s over looked. Facing the empty field almost shouting out, and nobody is listening. The cars speeding by add to the solitude, isolation, and loneliness of this place. I’ve always been drawn to small things, or places that are classically and profoundly beautiful. That’s how I saw this place every time I passed it. I’m not a religious man. God was not on my mind when I took this photo. The impact it could have in others was. To me, the crooked cross says the message is imperfect, and heading towards dilapidation.

Editing

While shooting I metered first the highlights, and shot a little over to keep detail in the shadows. In post I converted to grayscale and used the color adjustment to enhance contrast. I paid extra attention to the drive way and the cross. I wanted the cross to jump out against the red barn so I adjusted the red to be slightly darker and adjust the contrast to Lighten the cross. I lightens the drive way up a little more than “a bit” to get a dramatic leading line.

In my camera bag

Canon 6D, an old canon L series 17-35 F/2.8, the Tamron mentioned above, a Sigma 105 F/2.8 Macro, and a Sigma 150-600mm C. I also ha e a set of square ND filters, a flash (just in case), a remote for longer exposers and B setting photos. Lens wipes, q-tips, and there is also a pocket filled with other stuff...I’m not sure what:).

Feedback

A polarizer is very helpful to bring the bright sunny sky down a few stops. I always have my tripod even when it’s sunny so I can shoot at ISO 50, also it really helps me slow down and hopefully get exactly what I want compositionally.
