Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot in an old barn located on a very rural piece of acreage that belonged to our township's school bus driver.

Time

It was early afternoon..

Lighting

Made a rookie mistake with this one. Was excited to shoot with Frankie and running late. Ended up leaving my spare batteries on the kitchen table. Not ten minutes into the shoot my radio triggers died. Ended up capturing this image hardwired to a single speedlite mounted on a stand atrached with a beauty dish.

Equipment

Shot this day with my main camera. A Canon 5D with a 24 to 70 mm f/2.8 L series lens. As mentioned above, my camera was connected to a Canon 540ex speedlite mounted on a stand with a beauty dish.

Inspiration

Frankie Mae and I were inspied by the rustic look of the barn and wanted to capture some sexy country girl images.

Editing

Some minor edits in Lightroom. Exposure, sharpness, a taste of saturation... I also did a bit of dodging and burning.

In my camera bag

Typically, my Canon 5D, various Canon or Tamron lenses, Canon and Yongnuo speedlites, accessories and an all terrain tripod.

Feedback

Besides not forgetting backups... This was a great exercise in making due with what you have on hand. The barn had no electricity, therefore no interior lighting and very few openings to let in light from the outside. It was great practice in capturing a beautiful subject using a single speedite in a very dark space. All in all, when things don't go as planned, don't get frustrated, just use what you have, have fun experimenting and shoot.
