Location
The photo was taken in an abandoned train from the train station in Cluj Napoca, Romania. The train was locked and full of old things, but this small place was reacheable and was painted with graffities by local artists. It was my first photo shoot and I'm happy I managed to reproduce the idea I had in my head.Time
The photo was taken around noon, 12 PM. Me and Catalina, my ballerina model went to abandoned side of the train station and looked for a place appropriate for this shooting. I remember it was very sunny and the sun was right above us and that she had to change her clothing in the train station. I went up to the place she is placed in the photo and tried to cover up for her so she can change, there were workers of the train station walking by.Lighting
I only used natural light and took advantage of the existing shadows, where I placed my model. It was difficult to shoot because the space was so tiny, I barely had space to stay next to Catalina and not have my foot caught in the photo.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Nikon D610 camera and a Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 lens, with no additional equipment.Inspiration
I was thinking about two main storylines, as follows: 1. The struggles usually artists and especially women artists have when it comes to create their art. Catalina is an excellent painter, a ballerina and also studied a bit of acting and played at the local theater. While studying, she also had a part time job and she tried to also make time to practice ballet, even though she was in her final year of university. It was a difficult period for her and that applies to all artists that try to create art but also have to make money for a living. She was feeling unsecure, scared, alone. 2. The second thing I wanted to express is the feelings of loneliness and trauma women go through every day, they are scared and sometimes victims of the society and that pushes them to a state of depression and both social and emotional isolationEditing
I only used Adobe Lightroom to edit the photo, I increased the contrast and a bit the clarity and saturation, to create more drama and I also applyied a bit of vigneting in the corners. In my camera bag
I usually have a Nikon D750 and two lenses, a Sigma Art 50mm f1.4 and a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8. This is the only equipment I currently own. I sold the D610 in order to buy the D750 and the Nikon 14-24mm was borrowed from a friend, I wanted to take the shots with a wider lens in order to increase the dramatic effect.Feedback
Nothing special, just learn how to find the balance between the light & shadows in natural light (especially in a very sunny day) and place your subject so you can get a proper exposure and the lighting you want. And also play around with the editing, too less or too much editing can ruin a beautiful photo.
