Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from my bedroom window in Highland, Utah. I am only a budding photographer, so talking this photo was very exciting for me.

Time

I took his photo around 8 o'clock in the evening. My family and I had just finished dinner and I was in my room enjoying some alone time. While I was sitting there, I had a strange feeling that I should look outside. Lo and behold there it was, a beautiful storm looming just outside my window. I grabbed my camera from my bag as quickly as I could and snapped as many photos as possible before the light faded.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the beautiful power that this cloud possessed. There was this ethereal sensation when looking at it. But capturing it proved to be fairly difficult. The light emanating from the sunset was brilliant and it caused a lot of over exposure when trying to take a photo. I had to turn down the ISO a lot. This allowed for the details and color to shine through.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon Rebel t6 and a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5 lens. I didn't need anything else for this picture.

Inspiration

This picture was a rare circumstance. I was very lucky to have looked outside when I did, I might have missed it otherwise. When I saw it, I knew I had to get a picture. When I began setting up for the shot, I noticed how the cloud shaped itself, so I used that to my advantage while using the trees as a frame. I was very moved by this snapshot. It's one of my favourites.

Editing

This image was wonderful without edits, so I didn't want to alter it too much and accidentally take away from what I had. So, I used very minimal editing on this photograph. I used the standard editing tools that came on my laptop and only edited the colors and the lighting a little bit. It was much easier to edit than to take.

In my camera bag

I don't pack much into my bag, partially because I don't like to travel heavy (and partially because I don't have much to pack!). I am only an amateur, so I haven't had a chance to really expand my lens choice. I always pack my 18-55mm because I have developed a lot of range with it, I also carry my 75-300mm f/4 because it is my only long range lens, also carry my 50mm f/1.8 for portraits and starry skies. I also carry a tripod and an extra battery at all times. I don't have much, but I work well with what I have!

Feedback

Utah has always had unusually beautiful sunsets, and I have photographed many of them over the time I have lived here. I suggest, wherever you might live, to always be watching the sky. Many of my favourite photos were taken because I happened to look up or turned my head by chance. Sunsets are some of the most wondrous things to see. And if you take into account the time of year, the wind, the setting and the colors in the sky, your photos will turn out fantastic. Sometimes though, in order to get the photo you want, you have to sacrifice a little bit. It won't always be waiting for you to look over at it. More often than not you must go out and find that perfect photograph. You might need to skip a meal and just have snacks. Or you might have to drive and hike and search for your incredible image. I know that working hard for what you want will always bring great results.
