Behind The Lens

Location

Middlegate Station, Fallon, Nevada.

Time

4:08 pm on Tuesday 13th August 2019

Lighting

The challenge was to get some detail into the side of the car in shadow in the harsh desert light. On the flip side, the time of day with a lower sun provided some great modelling of both the car and landscape.

Equipment

Nothing fancy, just my old iPhone 6S.

Inspiration

It was a grab shot while walking back to our car, having just had a very late lunch in the roadhouse. I like old cars and decay is always interesting. We had also just spent a few days at Speed Week at Bonneville Salt Flats so cars were still on the agenda.

Editing

There were a few very slight tweeks in Photos on my Mac.

In my camera bag

For this vacation trip to the US from our home in Scotland, I had my Nikon D5300 and 35mm, 12-24mm and 55-200mm Nikkor lenses, plus an SB400 Speedlight.

Feedback

For this shot, the desert location was critical as the wilderness and atmospheric conditions are perfect for old vehicles reaching this state of decay. However, if you go looking you can find interesting examples of decay all over the world.
