Behind The Lens

Location

This pic was taken on the B940 in the Kingdom of Fife, Scotland; heading from Peat Inn, down the hill, towards Baldinnie. I was driving and came over the brow of the hill to be faced with this sunset. I stopped and quickly grabbed a pic with my iPhone.

Time

21:19 hours on on 28th July 2016. That may seem late in the day for a sunset for many people. However, we're located at 56 deg North and it's light well into night time in summer.

Lighting

It's a sunset. I like the way that the sun reflects off the shiny bits of the road surface.

Equipment

Apple iPhone 6S.

Inspiration

We'd just taken a couple from the USA who were staying with us, out for dinner to a small seafood restaurant on the coast of the East Neuk of Fife. Part of the motivation for taking the pic was as a memento for them as they were in the car with us at the time. Also it was a cracking sunset

Editing

I processed the original a little in Photos on my iMac but much less than you might think. The aim was to get a close representation of what I saw that night.

In my camera bag

Apart from my iPhone, I shoot on Nikon D5300 and sometimes Nikon1 J5. I have a range of Nikkor DX lenses from 12-24 mm up to 70-300 mm with several in between. I use a Nikon FT-1 adapter on the J5 which enables me to fit my DX Nikkor lenses. I also have an OM - Nikon 1 third party, focus recognition, adapter which allows me to use my old Olympus Zuiko lenses from the days when I shot 35 mm on my Olympus OM1n and OM2n. My most recent trip was to the Western USA for 3 weeks in summer 2019 and I took a small camera bag, my D5300, 35 mm / f1.8, 12-24 mm and 55-200 mm Nikkors, polarising and UV filters and a Nikon SB400 flashgun. Most importantly, I took my eyes.

Feedback

Learn about light and how it models the landscape. Learn about the Golden Mean, the rule of thirds. Once you understand the rules, feel free to break them if that leads to better pictures. Look at the landscape, indeed look everywhere and see pictures before you even put your camera to your eye. Look at the whole picture in your viewfinder, not just your primary point of interest. Frame your pictures in the viewfinder. Have fun, enjoy what you do. Remember...."Those who attempt to follow the Tao will never find their feet on the path".
