Location
This was taken in a local city park where the grounds are kept very natural. It provided a great setting for a senior portrait session.Time
I intentionally timed this session to correspond with sunset. We arrived about a good hour and a half before sunset. It allowed me to capture the soft light from the late afternoon sun and the sun rays breaking through some of the trees nearby. It was a perfect lighting for portraits and I was really pleased with the way they turned out.Lighting
This particular portrait was a combination of natural lighting and an off camera flash. I wanted to get the natural sunlight shining on the trees and surrounding landscape and just enough rim light on the western side, while illuminating her and keeping her face from having any long or harsh shadows.Equipment
I shot this handheld with an off camera flash on a stand at my right side between me and the subject.Inspiration
This was a senior portrait session and I used a beautiful local outdoor setting.Editing
All my photos are shot in RAW so everything requires some kind of processing. I utilized a painterly filter to soften the appearance and some dodge and burn to lift some highlights and add some depth. In my camera bag
I always carry two camera bodies so I don't have to keep changing lenses. Depending on the type of shoot, I will choose the two lenses I'm most likely to need and put those on each of the camera bodies. Right now, I'm shooting mostly with the Canon EOS R and the Canon 6D, especially if I'm doing portraits. If I'm shooting landscapes, I'll use the Canon 5dsr. For the portrait session, I used the 70-200mm lens and the 24-105mm. I keep filters and cleaning supplies in my bag just in case conditions require it, and always have a tripod on hand should I need it.Feedback
Late afternoon just before sunset is the perfect time for capturing portraits. The softness of the sunlight adds a really nice glow and you can get some beautiful light hitting the surroundings that really add to the impact and feel of the portrait. The only caution is to always be aware of shadows, especially those that fall across the face. Use any natural light to your advantage and keep a flash on hand for off camera use if you need to fill in any shadows or add a pop to the subject.
