Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a cold frosty day on the Common near my home, whilst walking the dog with my Mum and as I turned towards her, to tell her something, I noticed that she was 'haloed' by the sun and the plumes of air coming from her mouth and nose, were lit up by the sun. I had to tell my Mum to "STOP!", "I have to take a photo!!" and of course, she did and there you are... It was a lucky one shot!

Time

I can't remember what time of day it was, but I suspect it was early afternoon, late in winter.

Lighting

I was struck by the 'halo' effect that surrounded Mum, and it was due to the low winter sun that was silhouetting her. I've often been told not to shoot with the lens pointed towards the sun, but have found, that this is when you experience some wonderful, natural lighting effects...

Equipment

I used my trusty entry level Nikon D40.. and honestly I can't remember what I had set it at, as this photo was taken so many years ago!

Inspiration

It was 'seeing' the halo of light being cast around my Mum.

Editing

No, I didn't do any post processing on this photo... It is, as I took it!

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D40, an 18-55mm lens, 50mm lens and a 55-200mm lens, lens wipes, tripod and gorillapod (for those awkward angles) and 2 spare batteries... Oh and 2 spare SD cards..

Feedback

I know you've all probably heard this time and time again, but the more time you spend taking photos, the better you get, and the more you understand about how to use your equipment, compose a shot and 'see' an image... BUT don't be afraid to experiment... Do shoot into the sun, do try different exposure settings, do try things that go against the grain and see what you come up with. You could surprise yourself with what you learn and some incredible shots!!
