On the last day at Fox Glacier & Lake Matheson, I finally got this shot! Previous days were spoiled by the wind. It was extra special being the only one there for more than an hour, especially since that spot was packed the night before.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the last day of a trip to Fox Glacier (West Coast, South Island of New Zealand). The specific spot is Lake Matheson, with Mount Cook in the background. Definitely an adventure to remember!

Time

I got up way before the crack of dawn to walk to this spot, but it was definitely worth it!

Lighting

I wanted no artificial lighting and just waited for the sun to slowly light things up ????

Equipment

I used my camera (Nikon D810), 20-70mm f2.8 VR Nikon lens, tripod and shutter release; and some thin gloves to keep my fingers warm and usable for adjusting the settings :)

Inspiration

I’ve seen many photos of Lake Matheson and really wanted to take my own photo of this majestic place. I enjoy the mountains, reflections, sunrises and when these came together as they did in the silence of the morning in the middle of nowhere, with no one else around I almost cried. After I took the photo I just sat there and drank it all in. That is what inspires me.

Editing

I basically just brought the shadow detail out; I’m not fond of over editing my photos.

In my camera bag

My D810 and the workhorse 20-70mm lens; but also on occasion my 105mm macro lens & 50mm lens.

Feedback

Patience & perseverance. It took three days at the different times and trying to beat any potential crowds.
