Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the gardens behind Chatsworth House, Derbyshire while my family and I were visiting the area on holiday in May 2018.

Time

This was taken the middle of the afternoon at 16:39 (4:39pm) on the 14th of May, 2018.

Lighting

With the framing of the house between the trees and the mid-afternoon sun, the surrounding green and the light blue of the sky above Chatsworth really draws the eye to the centre of the photo, providing just the right amount of shadow to the side of the subject.

Equipment

This shot was taken using a Canon EOS 650D with a Canon EFS 18-55mm Image Stabilizer lens with a setting of 1/4000 sec. f/5.6.24mm and an ISO of 800. No tripod was used at all.

Inspiration

The tourist in me always likes to document my travels with the hope to create a family album. The photographer in me can usually tell when a photo needs to be taken and how. As I stood in one of the higher garden areas and was scanning the scenes before me, I moved slightly, noting the natural framing of the trees and how the grand house seemed to fit perfectly in the centre.

Editing

What you see is what you get! I didn't feel this landscape shot required any post-processing in anyway. The greens came out beautifully as did the contrast in the sky. I loved the overall effect of light and dark, of how the colours stand out...all for just standing in a bit of dappled shade.

In my camera bag

My camera bag contains not only my Canon EOS 650D, but I usually am not without 3 or 4 lenses; Canon EFS 18-55mm, Cannon Ultrasonic Zoom Lens EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III USM, Cannon Compact-Macro Lens EF 50mm 1:2.5, & Canon 40mm Pancake Macro 0.3/0.98ft Lens. I also carry various lens filters for special effects as well as a UV filter. Plus, recently, I've added 2 different sized Zoom Balls; one standard size and one for use with a mobile phone.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to try something different. Get your camera out of Auto mode and experiment. After a bit of practice, you'll know what looks good and when to play with settings to become creative with your end result.
