Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken along the river Itchen in Winchester. To be quite specific, I actually stood in the river and fell over a couple of times to get this shot, but it was certainly worth it. There is no path leading to this waterfall so I had to break through a load of twigs, leaves and bushes to get here which is why I think it's such a unique find.

Time

I went out on the walk after lunchtime so the actual photo was probably taken at around 1-2 pm. It had rained pretty heavily the day before so the woodland around this spot was very muddy. I actually never planned to take this shot during direct sunlight, I was hoping to do it later on at dusk, however, the forest is quite hard to navigate in the dark and I didn't want to risk falling over.

Lighting

The spot itself was actually very well lit, if not over-exposed, with the light shining through the trees at just the right spot to hit the water. I tried to capture an angle at which the water was well lit so that silky smooth long exposure texture would show through.

Equipment

At the time I was rocking the cannon 1200D, and the 10-18mm wide-angle lens. I ended up using a 1000 ND filter so that the long exposure wasn't too overexposed. My go-to tripod for any of these all-terrain walks is the Manfrotto PIXI mini as its lightweight and easy to carry. No flash or extra lighting was used in this shot.

Inspiration

I was looking to shoot the long exposure "dreamy waterfall" where the water almost looks like silk yet the surroundings look crisp. Since I have never lived in an area with a waterfall, when I moved to Winchester I spent time searching for one and was very surprised to find this little gem hidden away.

Editing

I used Lightroom to adjust the colors slightly as the water was originally more white and yellow. The whole scene was a little too dark too so the darkest shadows were lightened a little as well as adding brightness to the white to make the waterfall pop. I also straightened the shot to make the log the horizon for the photo as I ended up taking it at a slight angle.

In my camera bag

I always pack extra batteries and memory cards as the first step because I've had times where I've run out of charge and storage space! At the time I would always have my canon 1200D in the bag along with a wide-angle lens, a pancake lens, and a zoom lens. I'm often quite sporadic when deciding what to shoot so I like to cover all depth areas when I'm outside, just in case I see something I really want to capture. As I mentioned before, I also keep my Manfrotto PIXI tripod attached to my camera just for extra grip as I tend to remove the neck strap so it doesn't get in the way. Other than that, I keep an array of ND filters and some sunglasses in my bag because you never know when the sun is going to come out in England.

Feedback

Attempting to capture a waterfall piece in mainland England can be rather difficult. The weather never plays to your advantage as its unpredictable and unique spots like this can be hard to find in good lighting conditions. I recommend walking into areas you have never explored before, scout for interesting spots, and always make sure you keep a plastic bag in your pocket just in case it starts raining.
