Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Cherokee, North Carolina. There is a visitors center of all places that several elk like to roam near.

Time

We had to drive two hours to where we thought the elk would be. I think we got there around 4 in the afternoon. There was two elk in a field but the big herds came out closer to 5 or 6pm.

Lighting

The sun was going down which my favorite time to shoot. Sadly, the sun wasn't very visible because of all the trees so there isn't much to tell about lightening here.

Equipment

I use a Canon EOS 6D Mark II. My lens was a Tamron 100-400. 312mm. 1/400 sec. f/6.3 IOS 2500. I don't own a tripod yet so I normally just prop up on whatever is close by. I think I used a fence in this picture.

Inspiration

I had been searching for wild elk for months. I didn’t have any luck finding them in Tennessee. As soon as I was told we were traveling to North Carolina I immediately searched for their locations. It was my first time seeing them in person and it was absolutely incredible! I am so in love with wildlife. It's so peaceful to watch them.

Editing

I used a black and white preset. Adjusted the contrast a little and the clarity.

In my camera bag

First off.. snacks. I travel with my husband and two kids so snacks are a must. Other than that I make sure I have my 24-105 lens and my tamron 100-400 so that way I’m covered for any situation.

Feedback

Patience. Patience. Patience. Wildlife is tricky. It’s not like any other photography. You’re on the animals clock. Sometimes they corporate but most of the time they don’t. Like I said before, I spent a long time looking for elk. I’m ashamed to say how many hours and miles I’ve hiked. It’s really all about timing, persistence, and a little luck.
