Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Sango Sands Bay in Scotland. We had arrived to the sun shining even though we had been tailed by the rain for most of our journey here. We made it out to the viewpoint even though it was challenging in the strong winds to walk over the narrow cliff that led you there. The atmosphere created by the changing weather made it a great shot to capture. Second after it was taken the heavens opened!

Time

We were on our honeymoon following the North Coast 500 route in Scotland. We had made it to Sango Sands Bay, knowing we wanted to see the viewpoint, in the sunshine after being tailed by the rain for most of the day! The wind was ridiculously strong and getting to the viewpoint was a challenge as it was so high up and on quite a narrow cliff, we just about got blown away! This photo was taken at 15:06 on the 11th September 2019.

Lighting

The sun was shining really strongly from behind us making the viewpoint and the grass really stand out against it's background. However, you can see the clouds and dark sky rolling in over the water which made it a much more interesting capture.

Equipment

This photo was taken on an iPhone 8 at f/1.8, exposure 1/1736, focal length of 3.99/1 and at ISO 20. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Having researched our trip before going, we knew that this was one of the must see sights of the 500 mile route. The weather had been beautiful most of the day so we decided to take our chance and go out to the viewpoint while we could. I couldn't miss the opportunity to capture the true beauty of this idyllic spot of Scottish coastline! Having lived in Scotland all of my life I wanted to remember my first ever trip to the very far north coast and the stunning sights that we saw along it. It is also a well photographed viewpoint by visitors from all over the world so I decided to try my hand at capturing my own unique shot of it too.

Editing

There is absolutely no post-processing on this photo. This is just sheer stunning Scottish beauty!

In my camera bag

Being an amateur photographer, normally my best friend is my iPhone 8 when it comes to taking photographs. This is mostly because I usually forget to take my camera on short trips. However when I do take it with me, I carry my Canon EOS M3 with my 15-45mm lens as this is my favourite for taking landscape shots. I also carry my 55-200mm lens as it helps much more when taking macro shots. If it is a planned photography trip I would take along my Manfrotto tripod as well.

Feedback

If you are taking in the stunning sights of Scotland always be prepared. The weather changes so quickly sometimes and as a whole the country is well known for experiencing all four seasons in one day! If it is safe enough for you to be able to capture shots of places like this then always try to, you never know what sort of atmosphere will be created by what's happening around you.
