Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo when i went to visit a touristy location in South Africa just outside of Johannesburg. The area had various sections including a man- made beach, restaurants, and a huge dam. As w arrived at the premises location the first thing we saw where these beautiful zebras just minding their own and grazing away at the grass. Getting close enough to take the picture was daunting at first but once i got the shot all fear disappeared.

Time

This picture was taken around noon at 1:48:52 PM to be exact.

Lighting

I wanted to make this picture different from any animal picture shot, hence i chose to add texture, mood and change the lighting completely from vibrant to noir. What also inspired me to change the mood of the picture was the two zebras looking directly at the camera as it inspired me to create a concept for the image. The concept i created was inspired by a quote "To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment"

Equipment

I simply used a smartphone camera to take the picture. Huawei P20.

Inspiration

I've always found zebras to be inspiring and beautiful. Their stripes and pattern can grab ones attention quite easily which makes them a fascinating subject to capture.

Editing

Not much post processing went into the final edit as the exposure, white balance and saturation was good enough for me. Most of what i did was creative editing which included changing the texture and playing around with the mood.

In my camera bag

Since i'm still new to photography I haven't invested in a DSLR camera hence, my smartphone takes the role of being the professional camera.

Feedback

What inspires my work is that i take pictures of ordinary objects or subjects in the environment i interact in but my aim is always to capture perspective and when i edit my picture that's where all the magic happens as that's where I'm able to completely transform an image to whatever mood i want it to bring out. When shooting i'd advice you take multiple shots at various angles and also if something urges you to shoot something do it, I've missed so many opportunities at capturing great shots.
