Once again I find myself lost in the beauty and richness of what appears to be a painting. Everything about this is so pleasing to the eye , and the composition is just warm and soft.

Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken at Sung Harbor Cultural Center, here on Staten Island. There are two reflecting pools outside the greenhouse on Chapel Road.Time
10:30 AM on a Saturday.Lighting
A Flash with a diffuser was added to the existing daylight to even out the overall lighting of the scene and to help darken the background.. The goal was to light the Lily just enough to capture it without blowing out the white pedals. Since the light was a bit contrasty this method was employed.Equipment
A SIGMA SD-15 Camera was used, hand held, Aperture f/18, ISO 200, Shutter 1/60 of a second, lens was a 28-135 Sigma macro, Focal Length was set to 135 mm. Since the light was a bit contrasty using a diffuse was employed. The simple addition several layers of tissue and rubber band which is always in my camera bag helped diffuse the light coming from my external on-camera flash.Inspiration
I was teaching a photography class on a Saturday morning, which we have done for several years on the first Saturday of the month. I was demonstrating the technique described above to a group of students. The Lily pond was in full bloom and the light was just right for the lesson. You never know what conditions you will encounter when you set out to work with other photographers, this day the conditions were just right.Editing
I always do some post processing, however on this image the amount of editing and correction were limited to cropping and minor color corrections. I find the Foveon Sensor in the Sigma Cameras to be especially accurate producing detailed images over any other cameras I use. For this type of image making I find that my Sigma Cameras are my ideal choice. Since that image was made I have purchased additional Sigma cameras and products. In my camera bag
Because you never know what you will encounter when you start out on a photographic adventure, I never go out to make images without the following in my camera bag: Several memory cards, extra set of batteries, a camera with an all around zoom lens attached (wide to tele),Two additional lenses, usually a macro lens and a very wide angle lens. Doesn't depend on which camera I take out. Also I usually pack a external flash, a small foldable light reflector, tissues and rubber bands, bug spray, a LED flash light, Lens cleaner cloth and a couple of lens wipes. I also keep a tripod in the car and use it if conditions warrant it.Feedback
Hand held image making is a combination of steady hands, low ISO, fastest shutter speed you can muster with an appropriate F stop to gain the most depth of filed. Most importantly you must compose the image in camera, take several shots, check your.LCD screen, adjust or bracket your exposures. Finally move around your subject and take images from several different points of view. Critically, examine and kull out your images, select the best and post process as less as possible.
