This photo was taken at Snug Harbor Cultural Center on Staten Island, where I live. Every September the park like grounds of the old sailor 's home becomes haven to hundreds of Monarch Butterflies. I was conducting a Class of student photographers on a Saturday morning and showing them how to best set their cameras for macro photography.. When this butterfly landed on the bush in front of me and I fired off several shots before it left. Close range and limited depth of field added to the success of this image.Time
10:00 AMLighting
It was cloudy but pleasantly brightly lit. Using an external Flash manually set to fill light was also employed. Which helped to darken the background slightly.Equipment
Canon 5D MII EOS Camera- Tamron 28-300mm IS lens, Canon 450 Speedlight.Inspiration
Surprise, right moment opportunity presented it self, the butterfly lingered a while collecting pollen and I was ready to take the image of the yellow flower when it came on the scene.Editing
Yes, Light room to convert the Raw image to a Tiff. Photoshop enhanced the colors and cropped the image before saving it as a Jepg.In my camera bag
Camera, two lenses usually one is a macro. A small external Speedlight Flash, a Flash modifier to soften the light. Mini reflector, extra batteries and memory cards, bug spray, lens cleaning cloth and a couple of foil pack wipes. Also I always have a sheet or two of paper towels and a couple of rubber bands. Which when the towel is wrapped around the Flash head and held in place with the rubber band are helpful in reducing the output of the light of the Speedlight. This is also used when necessary to reduce the shadows the flash creates.Feedback
Travel light and just be prepared, you never know when you will encounter something wonderful.
