Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at AlphaFit, a gym and fitness centre in Nairobi, Kenya. It was my first time shooting fitness portraits, and I really had a lot to learn from my subject and her movements.

Time

It was taken between 2 and 3 in the afternoon, on a very sunny day in June 2019. I'm glad we were shooting indoors! ????

Lighting

As with most of my images, I used only natural light for this one. The gym (AlphaFit) has large translucent roof panels, making light inside it very soft. Near the doors, the sun had created a nice directional highlight, resulting in good contrast between where the sun hit, and where the subject was positioned. This enabled me to capture her body profile in the best way possible.

Equipment

I shot this on a Nikon D3300, with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens

Inspiration

For the longest time ever, I had wanted to shoot a yoga practitioner in full motion, using a slow shutter speed. After reaching out to my subject, we agreed that we would first do some sort of a test shoot, then get into my project in the days that followed. During this test shoot, I really enjoyed the challenge of keeping up with her different movements and trying to get creative compositions as well. When I noticed how the harsh sun was creating interesting highlights and shadows in the gym, I knew it was time for me to make the most out of this contrast-filled opportunity.

Editing

There was no heavy post-processing on this one; just focusing on exposure and colour correction to bring out the contrast and get the image I had originally envisioned.

In my camera bag

I have a pretty small gear set, shooting mainly on my Nikon D3300, with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens, and my mobile phone, a Tecno Camon 11. These are what I always carry around. I also have a shotgun mic, and tripods for both my phone and my camera.

Feedback

Always be mindful of the light where you are shooting. The ways highlights and shadows interact might just give you the chance to compose images much more differently than you would have.
