Valles Caldera National Preserve was for over a century a privately-owned sheep and cattle ranch (the result of a Spanish Land Grant). It is now managed by the National Park Service as a preserve. In addition to the natural resources, they are preserving the historic buildings from the ranching days. This was added later in the ranch period - maybe 1960s.
