To tell my secrets of this photo would be to ruin the mystery, the illusion that I am in the deepest, darkest rain forest on the planet, stumbling upon ancient, undiscovered artifacts, experiencing this intimate moment between an old man monkey and myself. Continue reading only if you must know the truth, that the Sacred Monkey Forest is in downtown Ubud and full of classy, well-dressed tourists from all over the world who are wearing high heels and flirty skirts and makeup that defies extreme humidity. I waited 10 minutes for this shot, holding my camera up, waiting for that perfect moment when there was nobody in the background. He looked at me for exactly .125 seconds, which miraculously matched that moment and I went to bed with a smile and a happy cramp in my trapezious muscle.

Behind The Lens

Location
To tell my secrets of this photo would be to ruin the mystery, the illusion that I am in the deepest, darkest rain forest on the planet, stumbling upon ancient, undiscovered artifacts, experiencing this intimate moment between an old man monkey and myself. Continue reading only if you must know the truth, that the Sacred Monkey Forest is in downtown Ubud and full of classy, well-dressed tourists from all over the world who are wearing high heels and flirty skirts and makeup that defies extreme humidity. I waited 10 minutes for this shot, holding my camera up, waiting for that perfect moment when the background was empty. He looked at me for exactly .125 seconds, which miraculously matched that moment and I went to bed with a smile and a happy cramp in my trapezius muscle.
Time
Mid-day, technically the worst time of day for lighting.
Lighting
The spotlight effect is totally natural and lucky, a beam of light from heaven filtered through the jungle canopy. I hear angelic voices singing, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh....." when I think of the synchronicity required to capture this moment.
Equipment
Hand-held Nikon D90.
Inspiration
Rafiki, Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Indiana Jones.
Editing
I eliminated a light grey branch that formed a triangle in the corner and was very distracting along with the hand and foot of someone entering from the right.
In my camera bag
Nikon D90, Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 lens, reflector.
Feedback
Read fairytales, travel, and be patient. Choose your companions carefully so you can enjoy the moment and never hear the words, "Hurry up."
