I took this photo during my walk up to The National Liberty Monument in Kansas City, MissouriTime
I remember it was a really hot August afternoon. Walking up there was quite a challenge, which was lucky as it gave me a chance to stop and appreciate the architecture. It was taken at 14:56 in the afternoonLighting
It took a couple of shots to get the ideal lighting angle, letting the sun sit just behind the building rather than glaring into the lens. I wanted to make sure to capture the beautiful blue sky and clouds too.Equipment
I shot this image on my iPhone 8Inspiration
I was leaving Kansas City in an hour which didn’t give me long to explore further. The one place I knew I’d regret not going to was the monument. No matter the temperature or the time, I wanted to make it up there and touch its surface. It was quite eerie as there weren’t many people around. I was running, climbing the stairs up and up and when I turned the corner, I saw it in all its glory. I had to stop, reflect, and appreciate, the beautiful structure I saw in front of me. In that moment, I captured the image. I wanted to show what it was like to turn the corner and see it close for the first time, as though it was revealing itself. I think the photo captures that well.Editing
No filters! Just appreciation for the setting and its beauty. In my camera bag
I’m often just using my iPhone these days but I also carry my Samsung Galaxy camera with me. To me, the zoom on that camera captures entire new angles, without having to carry one of my big heavy cameras around.Feedback
Don’t just capture a place. Capture a moment or a feeling. Make every travel photo reflect how you experienced something. When you look back through those images they should transport you to the time you were there... into a memory and not just a location. Look around you more. Don’t just look at what others are taking, but orchestrate your own images. Make them original to you and your story.
