this was on summer solstice day, 4 am while selfie people was sleeping which explain that no human being is seen on the picture, otherwise of course it would have been fifteen people in my framing.

Behind The Lens

Location

Skógafoss is an eminently touristic site in Iceland that is frequented by thousands of tourists, hence the difficulty of being able to get this capture without anyone indulging in the selfie ceremony.

Time

I took advantage of the shortest day of the year, since the night lasts only a few hours between 1am and 4am to be alone on the site while organized trips and other groups of tourists took a well deserved rest, Hahaha... finally clever rhymes with photographer, isn't it?

Lighting

I always use natural light in a long exposure that promotes a healthy DOP and distribution of shadows and lights, with always identical shooting parameters that will allow me in post production to integrate in the composite imagery some characters in my backdrop

Equipment

For this trip I used D5300 I guess and a bare aluminium tripod, light and strong. But a good car AWD is mandatory also :)

Inspiration

I obviously did a lot of scouting before my departure on the sites I wanted to illustrate for a relatively short trip. So I limited myself to the South coast but all of Iceland is a fantastic country inhabited by Elves, giants, dwarves, and trolls of course

Editing

All right, I'll tell you : this horse was standing somewhere in Quebec outback and the merging was done in such a way as to give the impression that its hooves are immersed in the water. Indeed Icelandic horses do not evolve in this touristic surrounding but in protected areas of the Highlands

In my camera bag

Loads! my camera with a 16-35 f/2.8 as a basis, but also a 70-200 just in case, mainly for portraiture. My tripod made of cheap aluminium that never broke :) but also two cobras YN460 and a Gary Fong ... just basis gear and a set of triggers, if ever!

Feedback

Any advice? Yes! The world belongs to those who get up early ... but also: never believe that the excellence of an image is due to the value of the photogear you will use. Take care folks, I wish you a great day, Lou
