Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was captured from my seat in the grandstand at the outdoor rodeo at the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede in Alberta, Canada. I was seated about midway up.

Time

It was a warm sunny day in July at approximately 1:30 PM.

Lighting

I had no choice but to use the natural light of the sunny day at an ISO of 200.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 6D with a Sigma 150 - 600 mm telephoto lens on a VEO AM-204 monopod. The shot settings were 1/1250 sec. f/6.3, 388 mm and ISO of 200.

Inspiration

I can actually give the inspiration credit to my husband. It was he who encouraged me to take my telephoto lens with us to the rodeo. I felt it would be too big and bulky and would be an obstruction to other spectators. Also, the lens was a new addition to my equipment and I was still in the process of familiarizing myself with it. My husband suggested that it would be better to have it than not, and besides, I had him to carry my equipment. As it turned out, we had a fair amount of room around us and the super duper lens was placed on the monopod. I had never photographed a rodeo before and was excited to zoom in on my favorite event, the bronc riding. As each rider and bronc entered the gate, I had my camera aimed at the gate and ready to follow and click every possible movement. I did not use the continuous shooting mode as I prefer to do it on my own. I captured some great shots that day. This was my favorite.

Editing

I do all my editing in Lightroom and try to bring out the best in my photos with as little editing and layers as possible. I do use presets, and mainly use presets that I have created myself. This shot was edited and cropped in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

My main go to in my small bag is my Canon EOS 6D camera body, Canon zoom lens EF 24-105mm, Canon macro lens EF 100mm and of course, extra batteries and charger. When I go on a sightseeing or mountain trip with my husband on the back of our BMW sport touring motorbike, the large bag gets packed in the luggage compartment. This usually contains everything from the small bag, plus the Sigma telephoto lens. I also load my Sony Cybershot or Nikon Coolpix to capture shots from the back of the bike while we are in motion.

Feedback

I was still in the process of familiarizing myself with my new telephoto lens, and this was the first time I used it while capturing subjects in motion. The best way to learn is to just put your equipment to use. Experiment with various settings, and you will find out what works and what doesn't. My camera gear are my toys, and I love to play.
