Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Reptilia in Toronto.

Time

The photo was taken just before noon.

Lighting

The lighting was the natural lighting of the enclosure for this snake. Luckily, it's a tree snake and this one was wraped around its branch pretty high up and closer to the light.

Equipment

I used a Pentax K5ii and my trusty Sigma 17-70 lens. It's my walking around lens and is pretty much my go-to lens for any situation. One trick I used here is to have a screw-on rubber lens hood. I also bring a paper towel with some glass cleaner on it. I clean a spot on the glass and put the lens hood right on the glass. The rubber allows you some limited movement from side-to-side and up and down and totally cuts out any reflections from the glass.

Inspiration

I love shooting animals as if they were in their natural environment. When I saw Reptilia, I had to stop. You don;t get too many chances to photograph reptiles.

Editing

Post-processing was mostly to get the white and black points for a better dynamic range and then bump up the green of the scales and the yellow of the eyes to what I remembered them being.

In my camera bag

I always have my Pentax K5ii and a Panasonic Lumix. I carry a Sigma 10-20mm for wide stuff, a Sigma 17-70mm as my walk-around lens and a Pentax 60-250mm for tight shots and manipulating depth of field.

Feedback

It's an easy shot to get. Visit the same place over and over. Snakes are notoriously lazy and don't move for you. You just have to catch them at the right time.
