Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in North Carolina on a boating dock. It was the after the Independence day celebration of 2019

Time

I remember taking this photo vividly as it was not planned at all. My family were set to go on a boat to watch fireworks on the water but immediately started to downpour when we arrived at the dock. It was 2pm in the afternoon

Lighting

Lighting is always tricky when it is raining. Since we were waiting out the rain, I figured it would be a perfect opportunity to mess with the natural light I was given. There was barely any sunlight except for random moments as the clouds moved along. This was a perfectly timed shot

Equipment

I used my mirrorless Canon EOS R with an RF 24-105mm kit lens. F/4 1/500 ISO500

Inspiration

The American flag in the rain right after 4th of July was a beautiful image. Once I saw the flowers, the image came together for me. Always loved the idea of rain washing away the sorrow and being the beginning of something beautiful. I felt I captured that here

Editing

Yes there was a bit of post editing. I changed the blues and reds to have a bit more pop as the lack of sunlight did not highlight them. I used Lightroom to change the overall mood with darkening shadows and brightening highlights

In my camera bag

My Canon EOS R with a kit lens.

Feedback

My advice is always to try various settings and angles. Be in the moment and don't be scared to experiment. I took about four different versions of this photo and was able to get one that felt “right” in the end.
