Location
A large part of the world's population of Stellar Eagles spend their time in winter in Hokkaido (japan). We were on a ship and moved into the ice as far as we could to be able to watch he Eagles as good as possibleTime
We set out while it still was dark to be able to start photographing at the start of the day. Besides, depending on the weather circumstances the drift ice moves through the area and you have to stay on the Japanese side of the area. It is strictly forbidden to cross the "border" tot the Russian area. So it is quite a challenge.Lighting
I was hoping for some nice colouring in the sky as a background to one or more Stellar Eagles fishing, flying in or out. It was only a few minutes during sunrise that the sky displayed itself in these wonderful soft wintertones. And with all the snow and the ice there already is a blueish haze that contrasted beautifully with the warm sky colours.Equipment
Just handheld Nikon D850 with a Nikkor 70-200 mm f2.8 lens.Inspiration
Hokkaido in winter was on my bucketlist. I had seen so many beautiful pictures of this snowy deserted, zen-type landscape so when I was offered the opportunity to go there I did not hesitate. It's not just the landscapes but also the Eagles, Cranes, wild Swans. Although I am not a bird photographer one gets a sense of what drives these photographers. The challenge became to display an eagle in a way that shows it's character and featuresEditing
In this case there was hardly any post-processing. Lightroom is my preferred friend to process the photos, but in this case I wanted the atmosphere as I captured it.In my camera bag
My camerabag is probably the best organized thing in my house. There always is a spare camera (which from experience I know I need. I seem to be in the habit of dropping cameras into the water, but.... usually they survive), and then there is a few lenses, all Nikon lenses: 16-35 mm, 24-70 mm, 70-200. When I go landscape shooting and I do not need filters I may switch the 16-35 mm for the 14-24 mm. The 16-35 mm is in the bag because I can use the LEE filter system on it as it is the same as I need for the other lenses. These filters alre always in the bag as well. This is my default bag. On occasion I may put a macro (=105 mm) in the bag. And ofcourse the remote control!Feedback
The only thing I can say is to consider a visit to Hokkaido in winter!
