Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this where I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California. Because of the affordable housing shortage, I bought an old trailer and parked it on some friends' private property. It's illegal, but it's home to me.

Time

Shot this shortly after dawn May 18, 2019

Lighting

Although it was the "golden hour," the sun was blocked by the forest, making the lighting flat and even. I am facing the sun.

Equipment

I shot this with my cell phone, a Motorola moto g(6) Android.

Inspiration

I shot this specifically for InvisiblePeople.tv, an international homeless advocacy website. As a "lived experience" writer for Invisible People, the idea was to was take a self-portrait with my illegal home and truck in the background. I had take a couple dozen shots to get the framing, lighting and expression on my face appropriate for a homeless person standing his ground.

Editing

My hat brim threw a shadow on my face, so I dodged the shadow on my face using Corel PaintShop Pro X9.

In my camera bag

This was shot with my personal cell phone, but normally I carry around my Canon T6, two zoom lenses (EF-S 18-55 mm & EF-S 55-250 mm) and two prime lenses (EF 50 mm and EF 85 mm). I also have a Canon SpeedLite 270EX with an extension cord for off-camera flash.

Feedback

Think about the shot and the effect you're trying to create . In this shot, I wanted to use the rule of thirds to frame myself up close with my home and car in the semi-distant background. Like real estate, this shot is all about location, location, location. Move around until you get the framing you want.
