Behind The Lens
Location
Nevada County Fairgrounds, California. This shot was taken during an outdoor zydeco rock dance concert with Bob Woods Swampbilly. Juliet is a singer/songwriter and rhythm guitar player. This was shot during a performance with available light. This is not a posed shot. That's just Juliet being Juliet.Time
It was late afternoon. The band was performing on a outdoor stage The background was very bright and sunlight through the trees created all kinds of shadows. I've been shooting the band for years, and Juliet is an inviting target.Lighting
Not the toughest lighting I've ever encountered, but it was challenging. I watch the performers and shoot them -- and hope for the best. I shoot A LOT of pictures. I'm shooting people at work. I can't exactly tell them how to pose.Equipment
I shot with a Canon EOS Rebel T1i and an 85 mm Canon EF prime lens. No flash, no reflectors.Inspiration
Juliet is very photogenic. She's just basically cute. She is a very talented performer. I shot more than 400 pictures during this concert. It's one of the best performance shots I've got of her.Editing
This was the first time I shot in RAW, so I really didn't know what I was doing. In the RAW editing phase, I definitely compensated for the hot background and manually adjusted the color temperature. In my photo editing program, I cropped her guitar out of the picture because I liked the expression on her face so much. I used fill light to light the shadow from her had brim. I tried saturation and vibrancy, but I didn't like it. I intensified the colors by upping the contrast. Sometimes all I need to do with pictures is crop and increase the contrast. In my camera bag
All geared up: Canon EOS Rebel T1i; Canon 18-55mm EFS lens;, Canon 85 mm, f1.8 EF lens; Canon 55-250 mm EF lens. Speedlite 270EX with hot shoe extension for off camera shooting. Extra batteries, extra cards, remote shutter release, cleaning kit, tripod etc. Most of it stays in the car. For this shoot, I just had my camera and all three lenses. For just walking around, I just carry the camera with the 55-250 zoom.Feedback
Shoot a lot of pictures. Try to avoid "eating the microphone shots" (hint, shoot from the side). Don't use flash. It annoys people and distracts the band. Available light can be atrocious, especially in clubs, but if you push your ISO and shoot wide open, you can get some great shots -- in post-processing. Shoot wide and crop. Always put your pictures through at least minimal post-processing. When shooting musicians, try not to dance, but be aware of the beat -- know your shutter lag and anticipate the beat.
